<image:title>Blog - Expressing gratitude is more than saying “thank you” - ‘Tis the season – Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas – be grateful, give gifts, receive them, express gratitude. Yet what if our kids don’t appear to appreciate or even notice all they have in their lives and it feels like they take things for granted or are entitled? We can foster gratitude year round by noticing what we have or the deeds others have done for us, thinking about the meaning beyond the gift or the deed and appreciating the connection that gift giving can signify. Read on to learn more.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Parenting in the age of distraction - Have you tried writing a text and talking to your kids at the same time? You can’t do either very well. Just like our kids can’t scroll through Tik Tok and listen to us or do their math homework at the same time. As Erika Christakis writes in her article in The Atlantic titled “The Dangers of Distracted Parenting”, “time spent on devices is time not spent actively exploring the world and relating to other human beings.” This is true for both parents and children. Think of the opportunities lost. This means that when we are engrossed by our devices we aren’t paying attention to those around us — or only paying attention in a half-hearted way. Think of the message you are sending.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Need screen time limits? Create a family technology pact - The skills used to create a Technology Pact can be another learning experience beyond that of limiting screen use. When when our family was able to sit down and co-create our Pact, together we were able to talk about our desires, fears, and beliefs surrounding technology use; really listen to the other’s perspective even if we didn’t agree with it; and sit through the discomfort of differing opinions, speak up for our beliefs, and find compromise in a plan that worked for everyone. Learning how to negotiate and hear another’s perspective without dissolving into an emotional mess or raging anger is all too important in today’s world. What a better way to practice these skills in low stakes moments and in the safety of home.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Oh the possibility! - Studies show that when we give a child a complicated toy without instructions rather than tell them how to use it, the child will find all sorts of possibilities in that toy rather than play with it in some predetermined way. If we provide our children and teens with a garden and allow growth to occur rather than a set of carpenter’s plans that tell them how to build, possibility blossoms.</image:title>
<image:caption>In this week’s column I invite you to shift your focus from the worry about your kids to their potential. Which wolf will you feed? Feed them with creativity and possibility rather than fear, worry and anxiety. Rather than orchestrating every outcome, see her as an individual with the universe inside her. As Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young sing: “We are stardust, we are golden, we are billion year old carbon, And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.” Read more to discover the garden…</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Invest in family</image:title>
<image:caption>There are two things we know about parenting: it can bring us great joys, and it can be one of the hardest things we do. Parents can often feel confused about how to respond to their children in a variety of situations; yet parenting comes with no instruction manual. There is a lot of relevant new information about parenting, child development, and the brain. At Growing Great Families Rachel is passionate about connecting parents with these new ideas, working through solutions to parenting challenges, and normalizing our parenting experiences. Rachel seeks to meet parents where they are in their everyday parenting challenges and give them tools and ideas to increase satisfaction of their family life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - My approach</image:title>
<image:caption>We know that early experiences matter in a child’s development. These experiences play a role in who that child becomes as an adult. I believe strongly in giving every child the best chance they can have to move into the world as a thriving adult. To me this means giving parents and primary caregivers the tools, resources, and support they need to support their children, and at the same time take care of themselves. This doesn’t mean we have to be perfect parents; there is no such thing. What it means is that we are thoughtful about how we respond to our kids, and if we don’t have the reserves or knowledge to do this, we have access to support that helps us get there.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61ef70758cfef85e3fef8ab6/14712961-ac97-4001-bcdf-19bd448c86ff/IMG_7761+%282%29.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Home - Why work with Rachel</image:title>
<image:caption>Working with Rachel can help you understand the world from your children’s perspective so that you better understand your children’s behaviors, and feel empowered to respond in a way that supports your children’s development. Rachel emphasizes the importance of a strong parent-child relationship, and the importance of relating to a child with sensitivity and empathy while at the same time establishing boundaries and limits that teach the child or teen kind and respectful behavior. There is no one right way to parent. With this in mind, together with Rachel you will share ideas, discuss concepts about parenting and child development, and explore strategies that feel good for your individual family's personalities, values, goals, and needs.</image:caption>
